Employee turns tables on cruel coworker, faces HR meeting after he gets offended: 'He is just disrespectful and a bad person'

Coworkers are what make or break a job.

Who you work with can make an otherwise bad role almost enjoyable, or they can turn a professional dream into a nightmare. Unless you hire them yourself, you have absolutely no power over who your coworkers are; in that way, they're kind of like annoying siblings, but for work. While many workplace relationships do not extend beyond politely greeting one another in the hallway, they can also prove to be one of the best or worst things to ever happen to you.

Sadly, there are plenty of employees who find that those they work with are difficult people to be around. They experience a personality clash, or are unable to deal with the fact that they have very different styles of working. 

There is also the unavoidable truth that some colleagues are just plain horrible, and they can't (or won't) make the effort to hide that for the sake of professionalism. These types almost always cause problems, and they usually make a few enemies during their tenure. However, it is not uncommon for bad workplaces to let this kind of behavior go unchecked, leaving many of their coworkers with no choice but to suffer or quit.

  • In this story, one woman was sick of how one of her coworkers would continuously say offensive things to those he worked with. She decided to fight back, but this came with consequences.

    The 26-year-old started a job at this company 6 months ago, and quickly realized that it was not a good environment to work in. In particular, many of the male employees seemed to act immaturely.

    One man in particular had a reputation for being mean, and she reached her limit when he said unacceptable things to both her and an expecting coworker. She retaliated by insulting him back.

    This resulted in her being asked to take a meeting with HR. She wasn't sure how she wanted to proceed, but she wanted some moral support.

  • As I said he is cruel and mean with everyone specially the women and a couple guys who 'aren't alpha enough'. For more context I have ADHD and other things and I struggled a lot as a teen/ early 20's to be kind to people and myself I also still have the impulses to say all the mean things that come to mind but I worked hard in therapy to stop those thoughts and redirect myself somewhere else.

  • Fickle-Lemon-5982 NTA, but I would walk into that meeting with documentation from you and your other coworkers about the things he has said to each of you and let them know if they want to take disciplinary action against you, it wouldn't be advised until they take care of his issue..... should they decide to discipline you, I would take the evidence from your other coworkers and yourself (signed by each person) and let HR know you'll be talking to an attorney about harassment in the workplace a

  • Smooth_Load1570 Union rep here from the UK. Ask to be accompanied by a representative and also ask to see the dignity at work or bullying and harassment policy. Also take out your own complaint, mention that he comments on your body which can be construed as sexual harassment, point out that you have protected characteristics and ask HR what they are going to do to ensure Jake crosses no more lines with you or any other co worker.

  • Equivalent_Lemon_319 ESH mostly him professionally but morally NTA You matched his energy which works perfectly in just about every scenario except.....well, at work. It's possible you could face consequences but then again, if they only gave him a slap on the wrist, you might not. I really think you should just seek new employment elsewhere ASAP

  • SnooCauliflowers9874 NTA. He's talking about your body and other women's bodies, which is completely sexual harassment. HR should frown upon that. It helps to have as many specifics as possible before you talk to HR. Such as dates, times, exactly what was said, who it was directed at, etc. Sidenote: I love how you responded to him.   • angelicak92 HR reacted because youre a woman. Call them out. Ask them to explain why youre getting this response when hes been walking around terrorizing everyone since he started. Use the terms hostile work environment, sexism, bullying, abusive, and personal grievance. Before you go in speak to an employment lawyer because you do have rights and if you cant get one before the meeting then go in and say that youre recording this meeting for your lawyer to review.
